3D billiards simulator

Tournament cloth under the lamp, lacquered rails and balls with a deep gloss. Draw the cue back, choose your spin, let go: a real physics simulation slides and rolls the balls, brings them off the cushions and drops them into the pockets. A free online billiards and pool game in your browser; 8-ball, 9-ball or three-cushion, with a friend over voice and video, in rated pairing, against the computer or alone in practice mode.

A realistic billiards simulation

This isn't an animation, it's a billiards simulator. Every shot is worked out on the server by a physics simulation running 500 steps a second, and your browser plays the same calculation back to the same bit. Everything a real table does, this one does:

  • Sliding and rolling: the cue ball slides on the cloth before it rolls, which is why follow and draw work.
  • Spin: side changes the angle off a cushion and pushes the cue ball slightly off the cue's line (squirt).
  • Cut and throw: on a thin cut the object ball is thrown slightly off line by friction.
  • Piqué and massé: raise the cue up to 90 degrees; a raised cue with side spin curves the cue ball.
  • Cushions and pockets: the cushions meet the ball above its centre, and the pocket jaws can turn a ball away as on a real table.

Practice mode

Most people look for a billiards simulator to practise: setting up the same position again and again until the shot sticks. Practice mode has no opponent, no rules and no clock. Rack any number of balls from 1 to 15, drag any ball (the cue ball too) wherever you like and bring potted balls back one by one or all at once. Work on a bank shot, a thin cut or a massé as long as you like.

How to play

  1. Aim: move the mouse left and right on a computer, swipe across the table on a phone. The aiming line shows where the object ball and the cue ball go.
  2. Choose your spin: pick where the tip meets the cue ball: follow, draw or side.
  3. Tilt the cue (if you like): turn the cue angle ball; the tip stays put and the butt rises. For piqué and massé.
  4. Strike: draw the cue back and let go; the further you draw, the harder you hit.

Is the billiards simulator free, and do I need to download anything?

It is free and there is nothing to download: the billiards simulator opens in your browser, on a computer or a phone. Start as a guest straight away, or make an account to keep your rating and chips.

Is there a practice mode?

Yes. In practice mode you play alone, with no rules and no clock: pick 1 to 15 balls, drag any ball (the cue ball too) wherever you like and bring potted balls back one by one or all at once. Set up a hard position and play the same shot as often as you like.

Can I play piqué and massé shots?

Yes. Turn the cue angle ball to raise the cue up to 90 degrees; its tip stays where it meets the ball while the butt swings round. A raised cue with side spin curves the cue ball (massé), and the simulation works that out with real physics too.

Is the physics real?

Yes. Every shot is worked out on the server with real billiards physics: sliding and rolling, spin, throw on cut shots, cushions changing the angle and the pocket jaws. The path you see is exactly the path the server computed.

Which games are there?

8-ball (solids and stripes, finishing on the black), 9-ball (always hit the lowest ball first, pot the 9 to win) and three-cushion (on a carom table, three cushions before the second ball).

How do I put spin on the ball?

Drag the red dot on the white ball at the bottom left: high is follow, low is draw, left and right are side. Side changes the angle off a cushion and pushes the cue ball slightly off the cue's line, just as on a real table.

How do staked tables work?

The host picks the stake and both players put it in as they sit down. The match winner takes both stakes less a 5% house cut. Chips are play money and can't be cashed out. Get up before the match starts and your stake comes back.

What happens when the clock runs out?

The shot clock starts once the balls have stopped. When the table's time (20, 30, 45 or 60 seconds) runs out it is a foul in the pocket games and the end of the inning at three-cushion. Three in a row lose the match.

Can I play against the computer?

Yes: easy, medium or hard. The computer plays with the same physics: it tries the pots and shots it can see on the table and picks the best, so it can only do what the table allows.
