How to play göbek 17
Göbek 17 is played with the 106 okey tiles by 4 players. As in 101 you lay your melds on the table and try to empty your hand first, but with as many tiles as classic okey: everyone gets 14, the first player 15.
- Open: your melds must add up to at least 51, or you lay down at least 4 pairs. The middle tile of a three-tile meld is its "göbek"; when they add up to 17 the melds make 51 (4-5-6, 9-10-11 and 1-2-3, say).
- Raise: once someone has opened, you need one more than the best opening so far: 61 after 60, 5 pairs after 4.
- Lay and add: after opening you can lay new melds and add tiles to the ends of melds on the table.
- Finish: throw your last tile and you score −1000.
A tile taken from the side must go on the table that turn; if you can't use it you give it back (for 500 if the table says so).

Frequently asked questions
What is göbek 17 okey?
Göbek 17 is a fast form of 101 okey played with 14 tiles. You lay your melds on the table, add tiles to melds and try to finish first. Its name comes from the opening rule: the middle tiles ("göbek", belly) of your three-tile melds must add up to 17, which means the melds add up to 51.
How do you open in göbek 17?
The melds you lay down must add up to at least 51, or you lay down at least 4 pairs. Openings raise: if someone opened with 60, the next player needs at least 61; after 4 pairs the next needs 5.
How are penalties counted in göbek 17?
Whoever finishes scores −1000. A player who never opened scores 1000; one who opened scores the sum of the tiles left in hand, with an okey counting 500, twice that for who opened with pairs. Finishing with the okey, before anyone else opened (or from the hand) and with pairs each double everyone: −2000 with the okey, −4000 with the okey before anyone opened, −8000 with pairs on top.
What does a tile taken from the side cost?
If the player on your right takes the tile you threw, you score ten times its number: a 13 costs 130, a 5 costs 50.
Is there a penalty when someone adds to my meld?
Yes. When another player adds a tile to your meld you score ten times that tile (130 for a 13). Adding to your own meld, or in partners to your partner's, costs nothing.
What does throwing a workable tile or an okey cost?
Throwing a tile that fits a meld on the table, or an okey, costs 500. Giving back a tile you took from the side costs 500 too.
